Strategic planning
Studio Montclair Inc. (SMI) is a visual arts nonprofit whose mission is to provide exhibition opportunities and professional development for student, emerging, and professional artists; and to provide quality arts education to the community. The organization has over 300 artist members, and presents an average of six exhibitions and three public programs per year. SMI also coordinates critique groups, provides arts services, and plays an important role in the region as an arts advocate.
In anticipation of the organization's 20th anniversary (2017), I guided its board of directors through a series of visioning and planning meetings to develop a strategic plan.
The primary goal for the organization was to build their capacity so they could sustain a permanent gallery and office space that could also be used for public programs and workshops.
Since the beginning of this planning process (2014), I have continued to advise the board in areas of governance (board recruitment and expansion), fundraising, grant research and writing, staffing and policy. Currently I am assisting the board in the creation of two-year work plans for programs, operations, marketing and fundraising.
As a result of the organization's hard work in implementing the plan, their budget has increased and in October of 2017 they moved into their permanent gallery.
